Do Forever Stamps Expire? What Forever Actually Means

Valid unused ordinary Forever stamps do not have an expiration date. They remain usable for the current First-Class Mail one-ounce stamped-letter price, provided they are genuine, unused, undamaged, and the mailpiece qualifies for that category.

What “Forever” Does and Does Not Mean

The stamp's postal value follows the current one-ounce rate on the day of use. That value is not a guaranteed investment return. It fell from 49 cents to 47 cents on April 10, 2016, before returning to 49 cents in 2017. A Forever stamp also does not cover unlimited weight, nonmachinable surcharges, international mail, flats, or packages.

Important Historical Distinctions

• The first Forever stamp went on sale April 12, 2007, at 41 cents.
• The new 41-cent one-ounce rate took effect May 14, 2007; that is a rate date, not the first issue date.
• Many pre-2007 stamps show a fixed denomination, but some earlier U.S. stamps were also nondenominated. Identify the actual issue instead of assuming every older stamp has a printed cent value.

What Can Make a Stamp Unusable

A stamp may be unusable because it is counterfeit, already canceled or reused, detached from backing in a way that damages it, or physically damaged so it cannot be accepted or stay securely affixed. Those are validity or condition problems, not expiration.
