Postage Stamp Sizes
There Is No Single U.S. Postage-Stamp Size
Stamp dimensions vary by issue and are separate from envelope dimensions. Use the “Overall Size” in the official Stamp Announcement for the exact issue; do not estimate from a product photograph or apply one design's measurements to every stamp.
Three Official 2026 Examples
| Issue | Overall size, width × height | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Happy Birthday | 0.9100 × 1.1900 inches | Vertical pane stamp |
| Bruce Lee | 1.5600 × 0.9800 inches | Horizontal pane stamp |
| Postcrossing | 2.6200 × 1.3100 inches | Triangular Global Forever design |
These examples demonstrate variation; they are not minimum or maximum dimensions for all U.S. postage.
Image Area, Overall Size, and Pane Size
The image area measures the printed artwork region. Overall size measures the individual die-cut or perforated stamp. Full pane size measures the complete product sheet. Product packaging may add backing paper and margins, so measure the same field when comparing two issues.
Mailing and Collecting Use
Place stamps where they do not overlap, cover each other, obscure the address, or interfere with postal markings. For albums and mounts, use the exact overall dimensions and allow enough clearance to avoid bending perforations or die cuts.
Physical stamp dimensions do not determine postage value; use the printed category and mailing requirements when comparing current postage products.
