Do Packages Need Stamps?
Every package needs valid postage, but that postage does not always have to be adhesive stamps. A purchased shipping label can combine payment, service information, routing, and tracking.
Choose the Service First
Weigh and measure the packed parcel, identify destination and contents, then choose an eligible service. Price can depend on weight, dimensions, zone, speed, packaging, and optional insurance or signature features.
Stamps vs Shipping Label
| Method | Useful for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Postage stamps | Some eligible pieces when exact value is known | Acceptance and security rules can require counter handling |
| Shipping label | Most parcels and tracked services | Must match the actual package and service |
Avoid Letter-Rate Mistakes
A padded mailer containing goods is not automatically a letter. Rigid items, thickness, uneven shape, and merchandise can move the piece into package pricing. Do not cover barcodes or overlap postage, and follow hazardous, restricted, and perishable-material rules.
Packages often require a shipping label, but when an item qualifies for stamped mail, compare postage stamps for eligible mail by category and value.
Sources and Scope
A shipping label or stamps must match the actual package, service, contents, and acceptance rules.
