How to Address a Postcard
Most postcards place the message on the left and the delivery address and postage on the right, but the printed layout and postal markings on the actual card should guide you.
Domestic Layout
- Write the recipient name and delivery address in the designated right-hand area.
- Use a clear city, two-letter state abbreviation, and ZIP Code.
- Place required postage in the upper-right area unless it is already printed.
- Add a return address in the available upper-left area if desired.
- Keep writing away from barcodes and printed postal zones.
Check the Card Before Adding a Stamp
A stamped postal card already contains postage. An ordinary souvenir postcard usually does not. Measure larger, square, thick, or rigid cards because the word "postcard" on packaging does not guarantee postcard-rate eligibility.
International Cards
Write the destination country in capital letters on the final address line and follow the destination country's addressing format. Use the correct international postage, not a domestic Postcard stamp.
After placing the address and message correctly, confirm the postcard specifications and compare the available postage stamp options.
Sources and Scope
International destinations require the applicable country line, addressing format, and postage.
