Identify the Original Error First

The original Inverted Jenny is the 1918 24-cent U.S. airmail error, Scott C3a, with a blue Curtiss JN-4-H airplane printed upside down inside a carmine frame. Only one error sheet of 100 was sold. Position numbers, straight edges, perforations, gum, repairs, and a recognized expert certificate are central to identification. Later reproductions, tribute issues, prints, and altered normal stamps are not the 1918 error.

A Verifiable Sale Example

The Smithsonian National Postal Museum records that one original Inverted Jenny sold at auction in 2018 for $1,593,000. That figure is a historical result for a particular certified example and sale; it is not a price guarantee for another stamp. A block, single, position, condition, provenance, and market date can produce very different results.

Evidence Needed for an Estimate

  • Clear front and back images at high resolution
  • Exact dimensions, perforations, edges, gum, hinge status, and faults
  • Sheet position or provenance documentation, where available
  • A current certificate from a recognized expertizing body
  • Completed sales for the same type and comparable condition

Do not remove hinges, clean, regum, reperforate, or otherwise alter a suspected example.
