Metered Mail vs Postage Stamps
The better choice depends on volume and process. Stamps are simple and portable; metered mail can centralize repeat business postage but brings equipment, account, and compliance considerations.
Side-by-Side
| Factor | Stamps | Metered mail |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Buy and apply valid postage | Approved meter or mailing-system arrangement |
| Best fit | Personal, occasional, or design-sensitive mail | Repeat office workflows |
| Accounting | Track purchases and remaining stock | Usage records may be built into the system |
| Appearance | Choice of stamp designs | Printed indicia |
| Costs | Postage and ordering | Postage plus possible equipment or service costs |
Run a Total-Cost Test
For qualifying one-ounce letters, the USPS price list effective July 12, 2026 shows $0.82 for stamped mail and $0.78 for metered mail, a four-cent postage difference. Equipment, lease, software, refill, supply, maintenance, tax, and support costs are separate.
| Illustrative input | Amount |
|---|---|
| Comparable one-ounce letters per month | 500 |
| Stamped postage per piece | $0.82 |
| Metered postage per piece | $0.78 |
| Assumed additional monthly meter cost | $20.00 |
The postage difference is $0.04 per comparable piece. Under this deliberately simplified assumption, $20.00 / $0.04 = 500 pieces per month. At 300 pieces, stamps total $246 while metered postage plus the assumed fixed cost totals $254. At 1,000 pieces, stamps total $820 while the metered total is $800. The model excludes labor, supplies, taxes, contract terms, and nonqualifying pieces; replace the $20 assumption with a written provider quote before deciding.
Classification Still Matters
A meter does not correct a wrongly classified mailpiece. Your team still must know weight, shape, destination, and service. Recheck current prices and provider terms before making a long-term commitment.
If physical stamps fit the workflow better than a meter, review the needed quantity and order stamps online from the current listings.
