Wizard of Oz Postage Stamp
The U.S. Wizard of Oz Stamp
The clearest official U.S. issue is the 25-cent The Wizard of Oz stamp from the 1990 Classic Films block of four, Scott 2445. The block honored four films associated with the 1939 Academy Awards season. The Wizard of Oz design shows Dorothy and Toto and resembles a miniature movie poster.
Do Not Confuse Related Issues
The 2006 39-cent Judy Garland stamp is a different issue. Its stamp portrait was based on A Star Is Born; Dorothy appears on the pane selvage, not as the central stamp design. The 2005 37-cent Yip Harburg stamp also relates to the film through “Over the Rainbow,” but it is not the 1990 Wizard of Oz stamp. Event postmarks and privately produced labels are different again.
Identification and Value
- Look for the 25-cent denomination and the Classic Films block context.
- Record whether the item is a single, intact block, pane, cover, or first-day item.
- Check gum, cancellation, centering, perforations, faults, and any certificate.
- Compare completed sales for the same format and condition.
A loose design, reproduction, or festival cancel should not be valued as an intact 1990 block without matching evidence.
The 1990 Wizard of Oz issue is a specific collectible subject; for ordinary mailing, review the current postage stamp selection separately.
