How Many Stamps Per Envelope? A Weight-Based Guide
There is no reliable stamp count without knowing the completed envelope and the value of each stamp. Calculate required postage first, then choose a valid combination.

This table applies only to qualifying domestic stamped letters. A piece above 3.5 ounces, a flat, a parcel, or international mail uses another category or price table.
How to Determine the Number of Stamps
- Assemble and seal the exact envelope, including cards, photos, reply envelopes, liners, and decorations.
- Measure the completed piece and weigh it with a device that can resolve small ounce or gram differences.
- Confirm that it qualifies as a letter and check for nonmachinable characteristics.
- Find the required amount in the current price list.
- Add the valid values of the stamps you have. Use the smallest combination that meets or exceeds the required postage.
Page counts are only rough planning clues. Paper, cardstock, envelopes, adhesive, and inserts vary.
Situations That Change the Answer
- Square, rigid, or uneven envelope: a nonmachinable surcharge may apply in addition to weight-based postage.
- Large envelope or flat: use flat-size standards and prices rather than the letter table.
- International destination: use international category, destination, size, and weight rules.
- Printed-value stamps: add the printed cent values; they do not automatically become Forever stamps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two Forever stamps on a two-ounce envelope?
Yes, if both are valid, but at the stated rates they supply $1.64 for a $1.11 machinable letter and overpay by $0.53.
What happens if postage is short?
The piece may be delayed, returned, or handled as postage due. Check the complete mailpiece before sending.
Is one Forever stamp enough for every envelope below one ounce?
No. The piece must also qualify as a standard machinable domestic letter; shape, dimensions, rigidity, destination, and services can change the price.
Does a wax seal always require another stamp?
No universal answer applies. Its effect on thickness, rigidity, and uniformity must be evaluated on the completed envelope.
After calculating the amount due for the completed envelope, shop for postage stamps that meet the required total without unnecessary overpayment.
